Elevating her wardrobe overall meant having her clothing speak to who she was as a woman first and foremost.
Meet my client, Stephanie.
Stephanie is a stunning 35 year old wife and mama to 2 beautiful 3 year old twins. She has been blessed in building her business as a social media manager for creative companies.
This year Stephanie is moving her business from her home office into a new downtown office and expanding her one woman show to staff of 5. With this growth she is not only the face of her business, but the boss lady.
Since having to take her spin through maternity shopping she hasn't had the time or the energy to focus on her own personal style. Stephanie's wardrobe use to be filled with pieces she loved, but those days are long gone.
During our consultation I always ask:
"What do you want your style to say?"
And this was Stephanie's answer:
"I want my style to say classy with an edge. For the last 3 years I've been a human napkin for two babies, now toddlers. I feel like I lost part of myself when I became a mom. I love my girls, and wouldn't trade them for the world. I just need to feel like me in my clothes again, especially with my business's growth."
I love answers like this because they are real. Stephanie spoke to a feeling that happens to the majority of mamas. If this you trust me you are not alone, and it is possible to get your pre-baby mojo back no matter if your baby is 2 months or 20.
For Stephanie elevating her wardrobe overall meant having her clothing speak to who she was as a woman first and foremost. She wanted people to have the "wow I can't believe that stylish business lady is a mom" moment when meeting her. Her daily uniform of plain jeans and a tee, or yoga pants and a tank were not going to cut it even on the weekends.
Classy with an edge can mean a lot of different things. I wanted to pull out what these words really mean to Stephanie in terms of style elements. We did this by first figuring out her style icons. Then we talked about what is it about their looks that she is drawn to most.
Victoria Beckham & Demi Lovato
What she loves:
Victoria always looks pulled together and classy. You can't tell if she is headed to a play date or a design meeting.
Demi always looks feminine but there is a special edge to each of her looks that makes her outfits interesting.
Victoria Beckham Style Elements:
Classic pieces, lots of neutrals, pieces with architectural inspiration, completer pieces, impeccable tailoring
Demi Lovato Style Elements:
Feminine pieces cut close to the body, leather, lots of neutrals, accessories that add interest to an otherwise plain outfit
Stephanie's Style Strategy Summary:

-Completer pieces for every day looks

This mini capsule is similar to Stephanie's new wardrobe:
For her mini social media empire a stuffy dress code was not going to work. She wants her team to be able to feel creative in their clothes. For her that means creating the presence of being in charge while feeling feminine and edgy.
The suede moto jacket takes the place of the traditional blazer. This skirt is a satin tea length that works on Stephanie's long legs and hugging her curves.
Weekly date night is Stephanie and Erik's time to relax and reconnect with one another. At least once a month they go somewhere that is ultra fancy.
This teal dress is simple but has a bombshell edge with the draping. The studded accessories are what really make it fit Stephanie's personal style.
She said that she didn't want to look like you're average mom when heading to the park with her girls. Faux Leather leggings are a great way to achieve just that!
When you want to be pulled together all the time don't forget your completer piece. This silky bomber jacket paired with sneakers keeps the overall look casual without losing it's bold edge.
If Stephanie's new style speaks to you.
Here are 6 pieces that add the right amount of edge to a classic wardrobe.
1. Faux Leather Moto Jacket- Choose one that has feminine details like this one to enhance your figure.
2. Structured Bag- The mac daddy of bags does it all -Totes the sippy cups, extra diapers, and looks sleek and polished.
3. Curve hugging Dress- This dress style is universally flattering. The key is in the fit. Buy a size or two up to get the right fit where you carry weight (hips, tummy, bust) and tailor down for a custom fit.
4.Statement Shoe- This shoe should make you hold your head higher and push your shoulders back. No matter how understated the outfit this shoe will get you noticed when you walk in a room.
5.Jewelry with an Edge- Metallic pieces with hard edges-think triangles or square.
So many moments in your life can put you headed down the road into a style rut. Becoming a mother is just one of these milestones. Getting back on track with your style can feel daunting.
It doesn't have to be.
Great personal style starts with knowing what you want your style to say about you.
Ask yourself questions about what you like, decide on your style icons and what you like about their style. Creating a strategy will guide you in cleaning out what your currently own, and help you to only purchase things that truly feel like you.
P.S. Don't miss out! Each week I send looks you can shop right from your inbox!
